The World's Oldest Magic Book

You can thank Lucy McDonald for this very interesting article on the worlds oldest book of magic. Recently translated, it provides insight into the thinking of da Vinci and his friends..

----------------

AFTER lying almost untouched in the vaults of an Italian university for 500 years, a book on the magic arts written by Leonardo da Vinci's best friend and teacher has been translated into English for the first time.

The world's oldest magic text, De viribus quantitatis (On the Powers of Numbers), was penned by Luca Pacioli, a Franciscan monk who shared lodgings with da Vinci.

It was written in Italian by Pacioli between 1496 and 1508 and contains the first ever reference to card tricks as well as guidance on how to juggle, eat fire and make coins dance. It is also the first work to note that da Vinci was left-handed.

Although the book has been described as the "foundation of modern magic and numerical puzzles", it was not published and has languished in the archives of the University of Bologna, seen only by a small number of scholars since the Middle Ages.

The transcription has taken eight years, involved several translators and cost thousands of euros. William Kalush, a magician and the founder of the Conjuring Arts Research Centre in New York, who financed the project, said: "This book is the first major manual that is primarily concerned with teaching how to perform magic.

"Sources of magic methods go back at least to the first century, but this book teaches not only the methods but also gives a glimpse into how one might perform them with an eye to entertaining an audience."

The book was rediscovered after David Singmaster, a mathematician, came across a reference to it in a 19th-century manuscript. "It's the foundation not only of modern magic but of numerical puzzles, too," he said.

Tricks in the magic text include how to write a sentence on the petals of a rose, wash your hands in molten lead, and make an egg walk across a table ("commoners will consider it a miracle"). The book contains some of the first known European examples of numerical puzzles, which are similar to those printed in today's newspapers, such as Sudoku.

There is also a diagram of a moving piece puzzle which was the medieval version of the Rubik's cube.

Experts believe the book will give a greater understanding of magical history as well as insights into da Vinci's life and work. Carlo Pedretti, a leading art historian, studied the original Italian text in Bologna in 1954. He said: "It's a very important document. It shows how much da Vinci liked games and tricks - but only if they had scientific foundations."

Pacioli was born in Tuscany in 1445 and was a travelling mathematics tutor. He is often called the father of modern accountancy because his book The Summa (1494) contains the first published description of double-entry book-keeping, accountancy's basic technique.

He lived with da Vinci in Milan from 1496 for several years and taught maths and geometry to the painter, scientist and inventor. They collaborated on many projects.

In the magic book, Pacioli explains a technique for writing in code, which may have been inspired by da Vinci, whose left-handedness meant he sometimes wrote backwards, making the words decipherable only with the use of a mirror.

No originality attaches to this work and Pacioli himself called it a compendium.

Although da Vinci was a polymath interested in everything from art to anatomy, and Pacioli was a man obsessed with figures and logic, some believe both were enchanted by the magic of numbers.

The magic book was written at a time when people were burnt at the stake for witchcraft, and in the manuscript Pacioli seems to want to demystify trickery and to prove it was more about sleight of hand than supernatural powers.

Performing Magic In Front Of An Audience

Is there an upside to failure? There can be.. particularly if the audience doesn't know you failed. Being a magician gives you the opportunity to do a little side-step at the moment of so-called failure and fool the audience into believing what they just witnessed was actually a part of your act.. Read David's thoughts on the subject.. editor..

Performing Magic In Front Of An Audience
By David Fishman

It is all about how you present yourself to the audience: your timing, your sense of humor and your ability to distract are very important. Get on stage and perform the worst that can happen is that people will laugh and your trick doesn’t work out the way you feel it should have. If people laugh just remind yourself that this is part of your performance and continue with the trick. Call yourself a professional and people will assume that you do this full time and have no other source of income. If you are, or consider yourself to be, a magician, are you an amateur, professional or semi-professional.

When performing your magic in front of people or an audience it is possible to misdirect well enough to create the proper illusion, the trick might not work the way you want but the people watching will not know. You can control the audience with a wide range of techniques.

If you change your routine for each performance you may find that you loose the angles you need to perform the illusion, so you have to be very careful about viewing angles. You can mystify the audience by doing magic and leave them mesmerized. The result to the audience is having the belief that some amazing thing just happened. Make sure when you complete the trick that the audience cannot examine anything after the trick has been shown, and so there’s the problem and worry of having to hide your tricks as soon as you finish each one.

When performing street magic it is usually street magic when you do it for a small group of people, in a bar or in your home or office. Buying close-up tricks or magic tricks for the street for your own personal use is one thing, but if you are buying them to perform on the street and become a profession street magician you will need to practice your craft. Some of the great magicians like David Blaine, stunned audiences with his exceptional skill of street magic. Doing street magic is sometimes known as naked magic, doing street magic doesn’t have props or stage hands it the basics of magic with maximum effect. The magician will use everyday objects to mystify the people on the street and keep them guessing on how he did it.

If you are doing tricks with cards practice in front of a mirror as fast or as slow as you can, trying to get a feel of how you move the cards in order to perfect the illusion. Many card magicians will perform some typical card tricks, and you can use the same cards to create the illusion that you have mental powers and use the cards to predict certain situations.

A variety of coin vanishing tricks are prevalent the world over. Some of the most popular coin tricks are the vanishing coin, eggcup and the broken pencil trick.

Everyone is familiar with the famous words of a magician, when children hear Hocus-pocus, abracadabra they become amazed and mystified with the man or women in the black tuxedo.

Meeting the Opposite Sex

I ran across this article the other day while perusing through a site I visit periodically for magic related articles for the Magic Roadshow. Thought this might be a little more appropriate for the blog instead...

----------

Meeting the Opposite Sex with Magic

Performing magic involves tons of audience interaction. What if you could use that to your advantage and effortless impress and attract women by simply performing magic? The bottom line is this: women love magic. Ask 100 women if they want to see a magic trick and I guarantee at least 95 say yes. The other 5 are probably boring and you wouldn’t want to get to know them anyway.

Consider this: if you approach a woman and blurt out a corny pick up line, it’s obvious that you are hitting on her and she will immediately shut herself off to you. However, when you approach her with absolute confidence and ask to show her something amazing, her sense of curiosity is aroused and she is immediately intrigued.

This guide provides some advice and tips that may seem unconventional. However, if you are willing try it, you’ll have a simple and powerful tool for picking up woman. The number one mistake men make when trying to attract women is this: they simply don’t take action. If you really want to succeed, you much go out and try these methods! Have fun! Who cares if you’re a bit shaky at first and your ego shatters a bit? It’s a fascinating learning process, a fun game.

There are four main points to my method:
1. Find
2. Meet
3. Attract
4. Close

Now, lets begin…

Step One: Find

My favorite place to find women is at the local shopping mall. Not surprising at all, right? Women love to shop, so where else would they flock? Traditionally, picking up girls is done at bars and clubs, so it never occurs to guys that the mall is a great place to meet woman.

Night spots are great places too. The girls who go there might even want to be picked up! If you love the night life, this is the best place for you to meet women.

Step Two: Meet

Begin with a hello. Never, and I repeat, never, open with a pick up line you found on the internet. At malls, if you spot a girl resting or waiting, walk up and talk to her. Most likely, she is taking a break from shopping or waiting for her friends and would enjoy seeing some magic. Start with something along the lines of, “Hey, I saw you from over there, and thought I’d show you something cool.” You can tell her that you’re a magician, but personally I don’t, since it make me seem more mysterious. Ask for her name and tell her yours, and now you’re ready for the third step: attract!

Step Three: Attract

Here, you want to go into your magic routine. It is important to perform the appropriate magic tricks. You want tricks that will appeal to her personally. Mental magic works great, since it gives a sense of emotional connection between you two. A great trick to perform is Stigmata by Wayne Houchin. The trick is extremely personal and gets incredible reactions. Another effect I like is the Revolution Coin Vanish. I make her ring vanish and tell her she has to search me to get it back ; ) Just be sure to avoid “shock” magic tricks such as Disjointed, Saw, or Needle Through Arm. These are great tricks, but not ones you want to attract women with.

While performing your magic, you want to come off as an attractive person. Convey your personality through your magic; convince her that that you are funny, deep, intellectual, and adventurous. Speak clearly and project your voice. However, don’t talk too quiet or too loud and keep a relaxed posture.

As you perform and converse, be sure to touch her, in a playful and natural manner. If you cannot do this, then you can forget this whole this. Touching, also known as kino, short for kinesthetic, is one of the most important aspects in attracting women. Kino helps develop a physical connection between you and her and proves that you're a sexual being, meaning that you're boyfriend material.

When you’re done performing, start some conversation. Ask basic questions and get to know her a bit more, while introducing yourself. Then, say that you enjoyed meeting her but have to leave. This sets the impression that you’re a sociable and busy person, not some loser who hangs around the mall all day, doing magic tricks. Make sure you tell her that you have to go, not the other way around.

Step Four: Close

Closing is getting further contact with her. Get her phone number, also her email or screename if you want. Ask if she would like to see some more magic (if you played your cards right, she will most certainly say yes) and set up a small meet up right then. Tell her that you’re free next Thursday and that it would be nice to ‘meet up and have a quick bite.’

That pretty much sums it up. Remember, this is only one simple technique on how to attract women with magic. Check out http://www.learn-street-magic.com for some incredible magic tricks you can learn for free!
