Well, it's that time again. Actually, it's past that time again, but who's counting? I've covered many a mile since the last issue, met a lot of great folks, and outrun a winter storm or two to get home and finish this issue.. Here's a big 'WELCOME' to all the new subscribers who took the time to sign up since the last issue. I hope you find something interesting and useful in every issue. A quick note.. the link to download EASY MENTALISM is still up on the homepage. While out of town last week I didn't have time to take it down.. so I think I'll leave it up for a few more days. You will find it about three quarters of the way down my homepage.. in a little block of links that includes one for Michael Finney. http://www.StreetMagic.info Rants, Raves, and Comments in General... I cannot properly credit this effect, as I have seen it performed by numerous magicians and do not have a clue as to where it originated. If you know, please let me know, and I'll publish credit.. Effect: Have a spectator freely select any card from the deck and then show it around. Ask the spectator to sign their name across the face of the card in bold lettering. Once dry.. drop the card onto the top of the deck. Tell the audience that you're going to perform a little magic, but do not go into detail about exactly what you're going to do. Show the top card again as the signed card and drop it back onto the deck. Ask the spectator to press their forefinger to the table and slowly and visibly take the top card off the deck and slide it under the spectators finger. Ask them to hold it tightly to the table. Now, show the top card of the pack as an indifferent card and replace it on top of the deck. Then, sit the deck on the table, remove the top card, slowly wave the top card over the card held to the table by the spectator, and then ask the spectator to look at their card. They will be quite surprised to see that the card they are holding to the table is the card that was just on top of the deck... and that the card in YOUR hand is the signed card. They 'transposed' right under everyone's noses.. Secret: You need two identical cards. They can be whatever value you want them to be. Depending on your preference, put one of the two cards either on bottom of the deck -or- in your pants pocket. Put the other card on top of the deck. Spread the cards face-down and let the spectator select any card at random, other than one of your 'special' cards.. of course. Show it around, have it signed, and drop it on top of the deck. You now need to get the duplicate of the card that's currently second from the top onto the top. If you have the duplicate on the bottom, you will need to pass it to the top or use a little misdirection to get it there. If you have the duplicate in your pocket, you can palm it when you put the marker used to sign the card into the pocket. If you palm it, it's best to hold the deck in one hand, palm the card, and then bring the DECK to the hand with the palmed card, instead of trying to put the palmed card onto the deck. Either way, you should now have a duplicate on top of the deck, then the signed card, and the second duplicate. Explain that you're about to perform a bit of magic. Perform a double lift and show the second card, the signed one, as the top card. Replace the cards. Ask the spectator to put their finger on the table as you demonstrate. Once done, take the top card and slide it under their finger. The spectator now believes their signed card is under their finger. Perform another double lift and show the second card as the top card. This is the duplicate of the card under their finger. Drop it back on top of the deck and lay the deck on the table. Reach down and pick up the top card, which is actually the signed card. Gesture with this card as you prepare for the 'transpo'. Reveal that the two cards have switched, using whatever method you prefer.. R.Carruth =================== Magical Trilogy Subhajit Chattopadhyay In this trick three cards are selected and replaced in the pack. Cards are dealt alternately face upwards and face downwards, one upon the other. The pack is squared and spread; all cards are now face downwards save three which are face upwards. These are the chosen cards.. Requirements: A special pack of cards, the lower 26 of which are double-backed cards. Method: 1. Spread the upper half of the deck and from it have three cards removed by as many spectators. Continue spreading the cards, contriving to have the three cards returned to the lower half, amongst the double-backed cards. 2. Square the pack, riffle through it as though estimating a number of cards, cut off all the regular cards from the top and hand these to an assistant. 3. Request him to deal a card face upwards on the table. Upon this deal a double-back card from your packet, commenting that you will deal one card face downwards upon each card dealt face-upwards by the assistant. When the deal is completed toss aside the six extra double-backed cards which will remain in your hands, 4. Spread the deck and show that the cards are alternately face upwards and face downwards, Gather the cards, square them and, under the cover of misdirection, try to turn the deck over. 5. Spread the pack on the table in a long even ribbon. All the cards will be face downwards save three - and these three will be the spectators' chosen cards. This is a great effect which I got inspiration after reading card courses like Card College. ================ Magic and the Opposite Sex.. What does Criss Angel have to say about using magic to strike up a conversation with a member of the opposite sex ?? "A lot of men don’t want to be the typical guy trying to pick up a woman, and that’s why magic is a wonderful vehicle for communication. Magic and mentalism and illusions are a great way to engage somebody. In my entire life of doing magic, I’ve never been in a situation where someone had a negative response." Read the whole article and Criss' explaination of the toothpick trick.. http://www.stuffmagazine.com/articles/index.aspx?id=1787&src=stf188 Magic and the Opposite Sex 2 Follow this link to the Magic Bullets Blog for another full length article on using magic as a way to meet others. It was a little too long for this issue of the Roadshow.. http://www.streetmagic.info/blogger.html =============== Haney Bottle Trick Dennis Haney performs a very entertaining and humorous routine, making bottles multiply. This is a version of an effect that has been around for many years, over one hundred in fact, that has been updated for a modern audience. In past years, magicians were content to perform this effect in silence, letting the multiplying bottles provide the entertainment. Now, performers like Mr.Haney add humor to the routine to both engage and entertain the audience in one fluid performance... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9KinKTSsaA =============== Magic Bunny - Learn to Perform Magic Tricks For those of you who missed this in the last issue and for those of you who are new to the Roadshow, .. this is STILL my resource of the month. If you don't have this site bookmarked for 'general purposes', you should.. http://www.magicbunny.net =============== 6 Ways To Force a Card - Video Tutorial Sites like YouTube have certainly opened the door for magicians everywhere to share their knowledge with others at virtually no cost. Being able to force a card is absolutely essential to many card effects. A number of 'top card' forces are not difficult, and can be easily mastered in a night.. Here's a nice tutorial, a little over nine minutes long, detailing six different top card forces. The first force is the riffle force, and it progresses on to the strip force and strip force variations, as well as the cross cut force and three others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2uG0Kl3PIw ================ Spin A Card - Video Tutorial Here's a flourish magicians of all levels should be able to perform. Hold a card between your thumb and forefinger, and then, with a flick, start the card spinning on your finger. I've seen many a magician perform this move, although I am not one of them. I love the appearance, but just never took the time to learn how to make the card spin. Now, I have no more excuses.. This is both a performance and a teaching video.. WikiHow details how, with a few minutes of your time and a minimum of talent, you can actually make your own wallet. Complete with written instructions and lots of pictures, I have confidence that you can make something that is highly personal and totally unique. If I can do it... you can do it.. In this article, I’m going to try and give you some tips that might take some of the mystery out of this sometimes daunting task. 1. Before you even try and put a routine together. Make sure you know your material while you are blindfolded, and hanging upside down on a fiery rope. "LOL" I know sounds a little harsh but this is where most magicians fail. How can you focus on a routine if you can’t manage your techniques? " Food for Thought" 2. Never use a mirror while you are practicing, I know you were always told "make sure you practice in front of a mirror" But hey this is 2007, get yourself a video camera it doesn't have to be anything fancy…$200 and your good to go. The best investment you can make. Now why a video camera you ask… one major reason when you look into a mirror you are really only seeing one perspective. A video camera catches what an actual audience would see. Plus your not staring into a mirror, your playing to your imaginary audience. This in turn, will give you more freedom. 3. Now comes the fun stuff…Given the amount of time you have put into your magic & your repertoire. "Get ready for this" you should at least have 6 basic sets ready to go at any time. And of those 6 basic sets, you should have 3 to 5 routines each. The reason for this… is quite simple. Say you are at a party performing your tricks, and it’s a pretty close knit party (people on top of one another.) Well, think about it you just performed an effect that blew this guy away… He runs to tell his buddy you have to see this…" or worst yet decides he wants to follow you around for awhile." So you can see where I’m going with this… 4. Another Tip, try and change up your sleights a little…" your method of operation." Not only does this keep you polished as a performer. But the main purpose is that it keeps your audience off balance. And that’s what you need to make them feel like they have just witnessed real magic. 5. And finally, an Example Routine Structure: You should always do your sets in 5 to 6 effects no more. Your opening effect should be surprising and very quick, to get there attention. And it also doe’s a great job in establishing you’re a magician. Your second should be just as amazing, but a little longer of a routine. The third should bring them down to earth just a little bit. The fourth, effect should send them running…"and this to should be a longer routine. The Idea is to leave them wanting more… And if you have done your job right of course they are going to want an encore, and this is where you let them have it…with your strongest trick. I hope these tips on creating a well structured routine. Demystifies this whole deal of routining, your act. "And puts, you on the right path." If you want to get more into routining and also learn how to get your magic business off the ground…Visit my lens for an example of the Formula I use to set up my routine. And continue to use this formula on every new act I come up with. ------------------ Frank DiPiazza is a Consumer Advocate and also a Professional Magician who started performing when he was 14 years old.
