~ Radio Magic ~

Magic on the Radio ? Twenty-four hours a day ?

It's true..

MagicBroadcast began broadcasting worldwide on the web Halloween
day. ( Oct. 31) Managed by Ryan Pilling and Gerald Kirchner,
MagicBroadcast has a website up and running to help you find them
on the web.

This streaming audio site is available to anyone with Windows
Media Player, Real player, Winamp Player (can be downloaded free
- if you don't have Winamp), or Quicktime plug-in.

Originating in Canada, Magic Broadcast is on the air as we speak,
and should have their 'official ' launch sometime in
mid-November. Check 'em out at:

~ Reader Questions ~

I'm going to take the time, periodically, to reprint a couple of
subscribers questions 'online' that I feel have an interest for
other readers as well... Here's the first two:

Question:

" Rick, I saw David Copperfield in person a couple of years ago,
and I knew right then that I wanted to be a magician. But, I
can't control my nerves when I'm in front of strangers. I want
to attend a local SAM meeting, but I'm afraid they will ask me to
'do something'. My girlfriend's getting tired of being my only
audience".... Preston.

Answer:

Preston, your problem isn't uncommon. Most of us, myself
included, are NOT natural performers. I've had a problem with
shyness, and have struggled throughout my adult life with
speaking, or performing, in public..

Two things to remember - 'focus' and 'skill'...

Skill is developed in private through endless hours of practice.
Another magician told me recently that he practiced to develop
'confidence'.

I disagree.

You practice to develop skill... and skill, in turn, leads to the
development of confidence. Confidence, without skill, is a
receipe for disaster ! You can't be a confident performer if you
have to worry about your technique.

Magicians have an advantage over other type of performers... One
of the principle techniques public speakers use to overcome their
stage fright is to look out into the audience, mentally pick out
ONE person on the front row, and pretend that they are directing
their entire speech to that one person.

Magicians actually get to pick someone out of the audience and
have that ONE person come to their side. Forget about the rest
of the audience for awhile and 'play' to this one spectator,
direct all your attention to this one spectator, and try to make
your performance enjoyable for this one spectator. ( BUT... don't
turn your back on your audience !)

Try to restrict your routine, at least for right now, to tricks
that require an audience members participation. And, if you're
still having problems, do as many other magicians have done in
the past and, unknowing to your audience, select a family member
( or your girlfriend ) out of the audience so you will have a
familiar face by your side...

Question:

" I live in a small town and I really want to be a good cardman,
. We have a library, but they don't have but two books on magic.
I've visited a thousand sites online, but I'm not finding the
quality stuff I want... Any Suggestions? " ....... Austin

Answer:

Austin, if you want 'quality stuff' you've got to be prepared to
pay... that's just a fact of magic. The trick is to pay as little
as possible... for as much as possible. And nowhere will you find
the wealth of information as you can find on magic DVD's.

Of course, I'm not talking about just any magic dvd's.

Dvd's are like all other forms of magic... you have the good
stuff, and you have the 'total waste of money' stuff. the secret
is knowing which is which...

But... right now.... there's something UNIQUE going on that you
NEED to take full advantage of. I won't make one red cent off
it... But do it anyway !

L & L Publishing, the largest producer of quality magic video's
in the country, is closing out many of their VHS tapes.
Everyone's moving to dvd's... so it was only a matter of time...

Many of the top tapes in their extensive line can be purchased
for a short time for $ 10.00 each. I recently bought twelve tapes
myself. I would rather have had dvd's, but where else can I get
about sixteen hours of instructions from Daryl, Martin Nash, and
Harry Lorayne for one hundred and twenty dollars ( free shipping
)?

I highly recommend any tape by any of the three performers
mentioned above. But there are many others to choose from. If you
need help picking the right ones, call and ask. They will be glad
to make suggestions...

If you don't have the money... cut grass, sell your rims, hock
your fishing rods... whatever it takes, because this won't last
long.....

WARNING: Not being willing to PRACTICE may cause you to perform
the same boring trick over and over again until your friends want
to break your fingers....

WARNING: Your first paying gig may lead you to believe that your
friends are really dying for you to telephone them at four in the
morning to tell them all about it...

WARNING: Don't let your success create the illusion that you are
tougher, better looking, and smarter than some really, really big
guy named "Psycho."

Well, my fingers say that's enough - for now....
