Tommy Wonder Mourned..

It has just been reported that the highly talented and respected Tommy Wonder of the Netherlands has passed away after a short battle with cancer.

Here are a few excerpts from Tommy's website at: http://www.tommywonder.nl/

"After winning a national talent contest which was televised in The Netherlands in 1977, his career really took off. At first specializing in table-magic, with which he won a second prize at the World Championships of Magic in 1979."

"Soon magicians all over the world became interested in his work, and many invitations to perform at magical conventions started coming in up until today."

"The largest trade magazine "MAGIC", elected Tommy Wonder as one of the very few European magicians who had the most influence on American magic in the last century."

And this from Wikipedia...

"Tommy Wonder is the stage name of Jacobus Maria Bemelman (born 1953), a Dutch magician who performs both close-up and stage magic. Wonder has performed in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo and on Fox television.

Wonder developed an interest in conjuring at an early age. He studied acting, dancing and singing for three years at the Academie voor Podiumvorming (Performance Academy) in The Hague and subsequently toured for two years with De Haagsche Comedie. In 1979, Wonder took second prize at the World Championships of Magic. He was again awarded with the same prize in 1988.

As Wonder designs and develops all of his repertoire himself, he is championed with high reputation amongst colleagues of magic. Wonder's 1996 two-volume The Books of Wonder are highly acclaimed within the magic community.

In 1998 Wonder received the Performer Fellowship Award from the Academy of Magical Arts in Hollywood. In 1999, he was awarded Best Sleight of Hand Performer from the World Magic Awards.

Tommy Wonder died on June 26, 2006 after a brief battle with lung cancer. His loss to the magic community is truly immeasurable..."

Spin Your Pen

Ever wanted to effortlessly spin a pen or pencil around your thumb? I know.. it's not magic. But man cannot liveth by magic alone. Visit Elliot's website to see links to videos of different types and methods of pen spinning..

--------------

Most people know of someone, or have seen someone who can effortlessly spin a pen around their thumb. A great majority of those people have then tried to do this, and failed. This article will help teach you this skill. Learning how to pen spin is a great way to increase your fine motor skills and hand-to-eye co-ordination, and is a brilliant way to pass the time. Also there are hundreds of other tricks to master other than the thumbaround.

Things you will need:

1. Ideally a pen or pencil of a decent length and devoid of protruding parts.

2. Some spare time.

3. Patience.

4. (optional) A carpet or jacket to minimise the noise if the pen hits the floor.

Guide
1. Hold the pen between the thumb and the first finger, with the center of the pen to the left of the thumb (if you are right handed).

2. Place your second finger onto the side of the pen (roughly where the center is). Just let the finger make contact with the pen.

3. With your second finger, gently push the pen in a circular motion, and try to get it to rotate around the thumb, and remember to release your grip with the first finger,

4. As the pen travels around the thumb, move your first finger away from the hand, ready to catch the pen.

5. Close your first finger to catch the pen as it completes one counterclockwise revolution (right handed).

Tips
1. Use the first finger to hold the pen, and the second to push. Don't try to push with both, or hold the pen with both.

2. This may take a few days to perform competently, and will take patience.

3. Find a longer pen to practise with if you are struggling.

4. Don't push too hard on the pen, only a small amount of force is needed to get it to travel around the thumb.

5. This can be frustrating, so just relax and understand that it takes everyone else the same length.

Cheating holds a Fascination

Here's an interesting article on mystery writer James Swain, written by Susan Rife for Southwest Florida's Herald Tribune (www.heraldtribune.com)

---------------------------

As he writes in the opening lines of his first novel, "Grift Sense":

Everybody cheated, at least everybody Tony Valentine had ever known. They cheated on their income taxes, on their spouses, on the phone and cable company, and if they had balls, in a Friday-night poker game or on the golf course. Everybody did it at least once; it was human nature, and a forgivable sin. But, those who developed a taste for it, they were the problem.

Valentine is a former cop turned sleuth who specializes in busting cheaters in casinos. His creator is also an expert on crooked gambling and casino scams.

Swain's interest in gambling and specifically in cheating came from his personal interest in magic and sleight of hand.

"Magic and gambling are parallel worlds," he said. When he happened to catch a glimpse of a gambler cheating, and winning, at a casino gaming table, he became fascinated....

Magicians and Restaurants..

First, this post is not about magic, or how to perform magic. It's about getting a position in a restaurant performing your particular brand of magic.

Working as a close-up performer in a restaurant is probably the easiest way for the inexperienced magician to gain valuable 'face time'. It's also one of the best ways to develop your close-up skills and work on your confidence.

Working the same location, week after week, requires a different strategy and finess from say - working birthday parties. Approaching friends, family, and co-workers to get a birthday gig is one thing - approaching the general manager of a national restaurant chain is something else.

Here is a list of tips I consider "essential ":

(1) Look for the proper type of Restaurant -

It will be your responsibility, among other things, to help the restaurant cover that period of time between ordering and receiving the order. Seek restaurants that meet the criteria of having a legitimate 'wait time'. TGI Fridays and Applebees are
good examples. Pizza restaurants that cook pizza on-demand are another good example. (Customers typically wait at least fifteen minutes on a fresh baked pizza)

There are always exceptions to this 'rule', but these type of restaurants are a good place to begin your search..

Since many restaurants hire magicians to work on typically slow days of the week in order to increase mid-week traffic, mention that you, for a fee of course, can just as easily perform for waiting customers on weekends. Not only will these customers
appreciate the time-consuming entertainment, but it will help cut down on walk-offs that leave at the first sight of a long line.

This little-used technique will definitely bring more money into the restaurant and keep paying customers from going elsewhere. Plus, it gives YOU work both during the week and on weekends.

(2) Dress Appropriately

- To be taken seriously, dress seriously. I'm not suggesting you wear a tuxedo to an interview, but as Michael Finney is fond of saying.." dress like you have some place more important to go later."

(3) Leave the Case

- Don't walk in carrying your close-up case, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have it in your car. Leaving it outside will give you a few moments to think about what strong magic you want to show the GM/Owner -IF- they insist on seeing a sample of your magic.

(4) Deal with the Decision-Maker Only -

You're not there to perform a free show for someone who can only refer you to someone else. Although some performers say call and set an appointment, I say go to the restaurant about one-thirty, eat lunch, and then ask to speak to the general manager/owner. Because you're there as a customer, it makes it more difficult for the GM to 'brush you off'.

The manager should respond to you as he would any other customer. Once at your table, ask him if he has a couple of minutes to 'talk'. Chances are, even after you disclose your reason for wanting to talk, he will still see you as a customer, and not an inconvenience.

Go on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, and try to talk to the GM around two-thirty - the slowest part of the day for most GM's. Ask the GM to have a seat.. it puts you both on an equal level. Be confident.

(5) Be Prepared -

Give the owner/gm a promo package of some sort. If you have to go to the mall and get a good photo of yourself at the glamour photo place - do it - and attach a business card to it. If you have a resume, take copies with you to give out, as well.

Some of the chain restaurants may want a contract. If you don't have one - I have a basic contract posted on my website at:

http://streetmagic.info/contracts.html

Print it out, modify it to suit your specific purpose, and run a few dozen copies off at Kinko's.

(6) Convince the Owner/GM

The owner/gm must be convinced that you can increase their business on traditionally slow days. If you're working on salary (or by the hour), you need to show that you can increase traffic enough to cover your pay.

Don't wait until you're asked- to outline your plan. Have three or four good examples mentally ready, and look for an early opportunity to present them.

GM's are in charge for a reason - they know how to separate profitable ideas from costly ones..

(7) Compromise-

Offer to work one night for free - if the management has reservations about your ability or usefullness. Give the GM a chance to see, first hand, the effectiveness of your magic.

If you're offered a tip, politely decline, and ask that, instead, they put in a good word with the GM. This is VERY Important.

(8) Pick your Poison -

If you're talented and personable, you can make more working for tips. Keep in mind that you will be competing against the wait staff, to a degree, for the customers money.

Think of creative ways to work WITH the wait staff instead. Consider offering them a tip if they refer tables to you. I wouldn't 'quote' them a dollar amount, instead, just tip them a percentage of your tips. If they can 'pre-qualify' the table, it will save you time and money in the long run anyway.

(9) Get Paid Accordingly -

If you decide to work on salary, or hourly, remember that you will perform a valuable service for the restaurant - one that no one but you can perform. You deserve to be paid according to your talents.

Good wait staffers can easily make a hundred dollars plus a night. Shouldn't you?

(10) Negotiate -

To make your job easier, negotiate the right to place card holders on the tables. This lets the customers know you're working, that you're working for tips or courtesy of the management, whatever the case, and to request a visit to their table through the wait staff.

Some of the biggest names in magic perform regularly in restaurants. Not so much because they need to - but because they want to. It's the perfect place to introduce new magic in your repertoire and make important contacts that may lead to very
profitable performances.

Mastering the ability to be personable is equal to mastering your magic. Both work hand-in-hand to elevate your status as a performer. Restaurants are the perfect place to develop your craft, build your confidence, and gain invaluable contacts.

Good Luck!

Marc Salem PR

Think you might be in Thousand Oaks next week? If so, then pay Marc a visit...

------------

Thousand Oaks, CA. (PRWEB) June 6, 2006 -- Marc Salem, a world-famous mentalist, known for taking his audience on a captivating excursion into the possibilities of the human mind, is bringing his Broadway performance "Mind Games" to the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza on Wednesday evening at 7:45 p.m., June 14.

Salem, who has been a student of the mind for more than 30 years, has amazed audiences around the world and even baffled Mike Wallace on a recent "60 Minutes."

This is his only Los Angeles-area performance in 2006. In his shows, Salem seems to read audience members' minds. He correctly calls out the serial numbers on a dollar bill in an audience member's wallet; he accurately describes an item while blindfolded. He can even change the time on a person's watch while standing several feet away. Salem doesn't use hidden cameras or "plants" in the audience. He offers $100,000 to anyone who can prove he's being helped.

Salem uses psychological techniques, visual information, a sharp eye for human nature and years of training--all which enable him to peer inside the human brain. To his audience, however, he is a master mind reader.

Salem admits that he can read thoughts. "But a thought is not the same thing as a mind," says Salem. "Let me make a distinction. To read a mind means I can go in there, and pull out things you don't want me to get. A thought is something that you're focused on." He adds, "80 percent of the information we convey is not what we say, but how we say it."

Salem has performed around the world, astounding and entertaining millions. "Mind Games" concluded two extended runs off-Broadway to both critical and popular acclaim. It was followed by a six month run at the legendary Century Theatre in Detroit. His show, "Mind Games and All That Jazz," broke all records at Feinstein's Night Club at the Regency in New York and won the Backstage 2001 performer of the year award.

Liz Smith of the New York Post said of Salem's show: "Mind-blowing is the only way to describe Marc Salem's Mind Games. This is a one man tour de force as Marc wows and charms his audience for an hour and a half with his incredible ability to read minds."

Says Susan Pollack of the Detroit News, "Salem's sometimes spooky, often baffling, always entertaining one-man show, Mind Games, leaves members of the audience collectively shaking their heads and muttering, 'How the heck did he do that?' In a word, it's mind-blowing."

The evening is presented by Chabad of the Conejo and The Friendship Circle. Tickets ($25 - $180) are available by going to www.SalemMindGames.com, through Ticketmaster (www.ticketmaster.com) or at the box office. For more information, including group tickets, call 818-991-0991.

Gerry McCambridge the Mentalist

LAS VEGAS, NV -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/01/2006 -- Award-winning mentalist, Gerry McCambridge, has found a home on the Las Vegas Strip at The Legendary Stardust Resort & Casino with performances beginning June 2.

In July 2005, McCambridge arrived in Las Vegas from New York and signed a three-week contract with a local casino. Due to popular demand and high ticket sales, McCambridge performed nightly for the past 47 weeks before deciding to end his run and take his act to the Las Vegas Strip.

The Mentalist's show is a mixture of comedy, mind reading, intuition and strange predictions. The show is full of audience participation -- one routine includes McCambridge reading the mind of someone in another state randomly called by an audience member, on the caller's very own cellular phone. Throughout the show, audience members select each other as volunteers in order to demonstrate there is no conspiracy occurring. McCambridge has a standing offer of $500,000 payable to anyone who can prove he uses stooges, audience plants, confederates, or collects any secret information prior to the show to accomplish his amazing feats of impossible-to-believe skills of mentalism.

McCambridge has appeared on many national television shows including "The Today Show," "Special Report on CNBC," "Late Night with David Letterman," "The Best Damn Sports Show... Period," "Soap Talk," and "The Vegas Show." He starred in a critically acclaimed off-Broadway show in New York City, as well as starred in and executive produced NBC's "The Mentalist," which currently airs worldwide. In 2005, the International Psychic Entertainers Association unanimously voted him as the World's Top Entertainer in the area of comedy and mentalism.

For years, McCambridge was known as "The Mentalist to the Stars," performing at ultra private A-list Hollywood celebrity parties.
