MindFreak

From the AETV website..

"During its first season, CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK garnered critical acclaim, delivered big ratings numbers and some of the youngest demos in the Network's history. Season Two promises more of the same, with 20 half-hour World Premiere episodes. In each episode viewers will witness Criss Angel as he captivates audiences with mind-boggling demonstrations of his skills; goes behind-the-scenes as he researches and executes his demonstrations with his crew; and meet celebrity friends who drop by to willingly participate in his antics. The second season of CRISS ANGEL MINDFREAK is filmed in Las Vegas and Los Angeles."

The new season starts Wednesday night, May 31st, at ten. Starting a 8 AM Wednesday morning AETV will re-broadcast ten MindFreak shows from last year, just in case you missed one..

Again, I'm not going to get into a discussion about the validity of Criss and his magic. Just a Henning and Blaine shaped the face of magic for a new generation, so will Criss Angel. Love him or hate him.. you STILL have to deal with him..

You can get a peek at some of the new stunts and illusions HERE

I've been bored.. I can tell, because I'm thinking those 'weird' thoughts again. No.. nothing drastic, just impatient thoughts that get me off the main trail and onto those little side streets that have absolutely nothing to do with the task at hand...

I should be thinking about magic, and newsletters, and upcoming performances, and reading one of those half dozen or so unread books beside my recliner. But nooooo..

I have spent part of the past couple of weeks developing, and subsequently hiding, unlisted pages around my web sites. Now, most of this stuff is simply articles, video's, and pictures that I found interesting at the time I found them, but, I couldn't think of any logical use for them.. They weren't magic related, and if I write about them in this blog, it actually cost me money.

Why?

Because of the illfavored road Google ads meanders down when you publish unrelated content. It doesn't take much to knock Google ads outside the boundries of profitability. Not many of my readers will click on an ad for decorating techniques simply because I mentioned Erdnase 'color change' routine..

These pages are not only hidden.. they are hidden from the search engines as well. I don't want my idiosyncrasies to cost my site's standing in the search engines, but I do want to publish a thing or two for my readers to enjoy..

I decided to 'release' this video today, since the Pentagon has decided just today to release photos of the terrorist's plane on 9-11 hitting the Pentagon.

Don't think I'm a conspiracists' or a kook. I AM very inquisitive, and ask lots of questions in search of logical answers. I'm constantly amazed by the nature of man, and the stories man can weave to 'entertain' and/or indulge himself..

Watch the movie a tell me what you think.. I haven't formed an opinion personally, so you won't hurt my feelings either way..

Barry's Special.. My take

Did you watch Keith Barry's special last night? I can say that I've never seen Keith before this special, I knew him by name only. After watching his show, I've arrived at the following notions..

There's no way to compare it to David Blaines special- Two entirely different styles of magic. Keith is more of a mentalist and performs effects that David would not perform during his shows. Apples and oranges..

I probably appreciated Keith's show more.. on a magic level. Personally, I'm more of a mentalist than a magician anyway, so there was more in Keith's performance to interest me than in Davids.

Specifically, Keith did a little blindfold driving that was entertaining in that it was not drawn out. Have the masked checked out, put it on, fly around a few curves and scare the crap out of your passenger. Move on to the next effect.. I like it like that..

Keith performed a little himber wallet effect on Matthew McConaughey and a mind reading effect on Jessica Simpson that left her totally befuzzled.. (Which I suspect wasn't very hard..)

He also performed a triple card revelation, coupled with a million dollar bet, on Vivica Fox and friends that left all three women gushing praise for Keith. This may have been my favorite effect, I'm still thinking about it..

The spike and cups effect was pulled on Elijah Woods and Rachael Hunter. A spike was hidden under one cup and Keith used the actors hand to smash the cups. Additionally, he allowed them to pick the cups that were smashed. This was an impressive demonstration with a very nice twist - somewhat more complicated that Cris Korms effect last year..

There was also a nice book effect on the two hosts of Entertainment Tonight (I think). Keith employed a 'black ops hypnosis' technique on the two assistants to make them forget what they had just performed.. Go figure..

There was also a grand finale.. the mixing of six hangmens' noose, and the subsequent placing of one on Keiths neck, chosen at randon by the audience..

I was pleased that most of the effects were mental magic related, as opposed to the typical illusionist-type effects performed by most magicians who are seen on TV.

If you watched.. what did you think?

Blaine After-Thoughts

OK.. Davids special is over, and I feel an obligation to post a little something. Personally, I enjoyed the special. I think it accomplished exactly what it intended to accomplish.. pulled viewers to ABC during the sweeps.

I think David gave it his all, and no one should dis him for that. Whether you like him as a magician or not really doesn't matter.. it's all about the entertainment. That's what David has done since day one, put on a show that he felt was entertaining. There was never any attempt on David's part to prove that he was the country's foremost magician or sleight of hand artist. He had an idea, got some backing, made the first Street Magic with the help of friends, and then pitched it to the network executives.

They liked it.. and the rest is history.

What David has accomplished, he achieved on his own. No one picked him out of a line-up of magicians and decided to make him a star. And that's what the magic fraternity at large can't seem to deal with. They are extremely jealous of Mr. Blaine, and feel as if any number of other magicians would have been better suited to star in their own specials. Problem is... the 'other' magicians weren't willing to put their money where their talent is.

Now, as far a magic talent is concerned, David is probably a 6.5 out of 10. He handles a deck of cards fairly well, and has good timing.. abet an unorthodox style. But all this is not about skill, it's about 'entertainment'. And David entertains a large enough segment of the population that his specials are deemed worthy by those who have the power to make those type of decisions.

There you go.. Any questions?

If you don't like him.. fine. That's your perogative. Don't watch.

As for this special.. I wish that there had been a few more magic effects. I thought surely with this one running two hours there would be a good deal of magic. I really enjoyed the 'tooth effect' in the casino. A friend called me late last week and swore me to secrecy concerning this effect. The dentist that developed the effect lives in Ohio and is friends with a magician friend of mine, and he was asked to assist David with the effect. I was looking for the effect, even though I didn't know what was going to happen...

I think the basic premise of the special, testing the limits of endurance under water, were carried out with a great deal of professionalism. David never appeared to be trying to accomplish anything other than holding his breath for nine minutes... although I didn't understand the purpose of the chains in the middle of a serious stunt..

All in all, I would give this special a "B", which is more than I would have anticipated giving it. I hope each of you found some enjoyment in the special as well..

Keith Barry & Celebs

A press release from CBS on Fridays Keith Barry magic special...

(CBS) LOS ANGELES Magician Keith Barry performs daredevil stunts -- such as driving a car at top speed on a winding road while blindfolded, and defying a real hangman's noose -- on his CBS primetime special, "Keith Barry: Extraordinary," on May 12 at 8 p.m.

Barry, who has been performing magic since age 14, dazzles his celebrity guests with sleight-of-hand and mentalism effects. He gambles $1-million on a card trick with Vivica Fox and her friends, and performs mind-control "experiments" with Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Simpson. And he plays an unusual game of Russian roulette with Elijah Wood and Rachel Hunter.

Barry, who grew up in Ireland, conquered Hollywood in April 2005, when he invited entertainment industry execs to his live stage show, "Brainwashed," at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. He's had his own MTV special, has guest-starred on "CSI Miami," and his TV series “Close Encounters With Keith Barry” now airs in 28 countries.

Blaine Press Release

Since David went into self-imposed exile inside his bubble yesterday, I thought I would re-print the 'official' press release - directly from his web site.

---------------

DAVID BLAINE WILL STUN THE WORLD WITH ANOTHER DEATH-DEFYING FEAT ON"DAVID BLAINE: DROWNED ALIVE," LIVE FROM NEW YORK'S L*****N CENTER,MONDAY, MAY 8 ON ABC

Blaine Will Attempt to Hold His Breath Underwater Longer Than Any Other Human Being,

After Spending Seven Days Living in a Spectacular Human Aquarium in Full Public ViewDavid Blaine, known for his headline-making feats of physical, emotional and mental endurance, will once again put his life on the line in a death-defying attempt to hold his breath underwater longer than any human being, which is currently a stunning eight minutes, 58 seconds.

He will undertake this latest challenge after living with a life support system in a specially built human aquarium -- an eight-foot acrylic sphere -- for seven days and nights, in full public view in front of New York's L*****n Center. Viewers will hold their collective breath during the heart-stopping finale of the broadcast when Blaine will put himself to the ultimate test - live - on a new, two-hour ABC primetime special, "David Blaine: Drowned Alive," MONDAY, MAY 8 (8:00-10:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Additionally, viewers will be treated to amazing new jaw-dropping illusions, as Blaine performs his distinctive style of up-close-and-personal street magic in a variety of venues from a casino in Las Vegas to Angola State Prison in Angola, Louisiana, to a New York art gallery.

The two-hour special is Blaine's spell-binding journey of mind, body and soul in preparation for his literally breathtaking feat. He even trained with the U.S. Navy Seals, who put him through what Blaine described as "the most grueling physical training of [his] life." On the way to holding his breath underwater for the longest period of time ever, he would surpass the great Houdini, who managed a then-astonishing three-minute breath-hold.

This will be Blaine's most interactive challenge, as passers by will be able to touch the aquarium, take photos with him and even communicate with him underwater from the time he enters the sphere on Monday, May 1, until he is leaves it live on his special.Blaine, 33, has been training for this most difficult challenge with a world class elite free-diving team led by internationally renowned trainer Kirk Krack. Other members of Blaine's team are Martin Stepanek and Mandy-Rae Cruickshank, both multiple free-dive world record holders.

Free-diving or breath-hold diving is a competitive water sport without any underwater breathing apparatus. This special will attempt to answer all previous doubters who have questioned whether Blaine has resorted to the use of body doubles, mirrors or other trickery in completing his past arduous challenges.

For the first time, viewers will be taken inside Blaine's home, as his trainers and coaches put him through punishing physical and mental training, including a rigid diet, preparing him for this latest test of stamina. He will demonstrate how he willed his body to defy physiological limits in his dogged pursuit of the eight-minute, fifty-eight second breath-hold barrier.Pushing the limits of physical and emotional endurance, Blaine faces additional challenges in the tank before he attempts to hold his breath underwater for the longest time ever by a human, including hypothermia, blacking out, skin problems with his hands and feet and nerve damage.

He will need to acclimatize himself in the sphere, regulating his breathing, sleeping at regular intervals and maintaining his hydration levels, if he is to be successful. He will be receiving liquid nutrition through a tube and the water will be kept at a balanced temperature in an effort to keep his core temperature as close to F98.6 degrees as possible. The longer Blaine stays underwater, the more body heat he will lose, his core temperature will drop and the more oxygen he will use, making the challenge much more grueling.

Blaine's last mesmerizing challenge was successfully completing a 44-day fast in an acrylic box suspended over the Thames River in London in the fall of 2003, surviving only on water. However American viewers have been following his exploits for years on ABC Television.

On "David Blaine: Vertigo," he balanced on a platform, 22 inches in diameter, atop a 90-foot pillar in Manhattan's Bryant Park in May of 2002 for 35 hours. In November 2000, Blaine's "Frozen in Time" challenge drew massive crowds in Times Square, as he successfully survived inside a block of ice for over 61 hours. In April 1999, his seven-day "Buried Alive" event stunned new fans around the country.

The country was initially introduced to Blaine's amazing brand of incredible effects on his first ABC special, "David Blaine: Street Magic," which aired in May 1997.

Shelley Ross is the executive producer of "David Blaine: Drowned Alive." Roger Goodman is director of the live challenge coverage. "David Blaine: Drowned Alive" is a production of Stacked LLC. (CLOSED-CAPTIONED)Ý"David Blaine: Drowned Alive" is broadcast in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate.

Street Magic & David Blaine

Street Magic Popularity Not Just an 'Ellusion'
PR Newswire

LAS VEGAS, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 8, 2006, David Blaine will perform another breathtaking performance on ABC dubbed "Drowned Alive," bringing another spike to the growing trend of street magic. "The number of people interested in learning the art of street magic is phenomenal," says Brad Christian, president and founder of Ellusionist.com, the MTV of online magic retailers whose products center on street magic.

The stunt will feature Blaine encased in a large aquarium for seven days -- in addition to an attempt to break the record of holding one's breath underwater. The current record is set at 8 minutes and 58 seconds. Performances like "Drowned Alive" show the extent of what a magician can do: creating a fascination in magic in the general public and the entertainment world.

"When a special like David's runs, our lines start ringing off the hook. From teenagers and college kids to teachers and business people, everyone wants to learn how to do some magic to impress friends and develop a hidden talent," continued Christian. Blaine, who has brought the term "street magic" into the public's vocabulary, is just one of the magicians that has propelled the profession/hobby into thousands of homes across the world.

Other magicians bringing magic to the mainstream include Criss Angel, whose hit television show Mindfreak on A&E has helped popularity soar. Criss Angel's street magic received the highest ratings in A&E history, and they immediately extended Mindfreak to a three-year contract.

"The experience of performing magic for people is indescribable," said Ellusionist.com creative executive and 18-year-old illusionist Jonathan Bayme. "Once you perform your first trick, you're hooked. The goal of each training product we sell is to make this talent attainable to the average person."

There is no doubt that with the next season of Mindfreak currently being filmed and Blaine's two-hour special airing on May 8, there will be another spike in the popularity of "ellusionists" around the world. Magic is also a surefire tool to give kids confidence in themselves and develop a skill that opens doors and entertains at the same time.

To help with learning, Ellusionist uses an MTV style and mindset to rivet attention. The site offers a powerful product selection that caters to those interested in learning the art of magic from the ground up.

Ellusionist.com teaches the actual tricks David Blaine performs in addition to its own hard-hitting brand of street magic. Ellusionist carries all products by David Blaine including the new Split Spades Playing Cards, the Blaine Fearless DVD, Blaine's book Mysterious Stranger, and full color posters signed and numbered by Blaine.
